Wörterbuch Englisch PONS App Reviews

Final conclusion

Well, I looked at pretty much every dictionary the store had to offer. I really wish that Itunes had a trail period or something so that if you do not like it you can return it. But overall Im satisfied with this product. I really wish that for the German side of things it had a table for all the verbs and tenses but I suppose thats what school is for? Anyway, if you have been looking at tons of other dictionaries and cannot decide which one to get this one really is quite helpful.

Update ruined it!

The new update makes this expensive program almost unusable. Now anywhere you touch in an entry (which you have to do in order to scroll down), it opens a new page for the word you accidentally touched, and then takes several steps to get back. Please fix; this was a great program until now!

A good dictionary, BUT!

It is a good dictionary that has a major flaw - one cannot look up conjugated verbs or inclined nouns and adjectives in German. I hope to see this fixed in the near future as it is something that is present in free apps and online services and it is a shame to not have it in a dictionary priced as high as this one.

Not as good at the website

I bought this app hoping it would be like an offline version of their website... Turns out its just a mediocre version. They dont have half the pronunciations they do on the website, and the app is just plain confusing to use. The definitions are also laid out horribly, with hardly any separation between them. I was excited to see it had a study feature, I was hoping it would be like the website where you can actually interact with the words, but it was just a really bad version of a flash card app. Im using this when I dont have an Internet connection to make picture associated flash cards... PONS I hope youre reading this.. PLEASE make it as good as your website. As of now I feel like I wasted $25.

No "Abbreviations and Symbols" used section

This app is expensive and a bait-and-switch for the premium version of the same "book." Most seriously there is no key in the help section to the abbreviations and symbols used. Some of the abbreviations are for English words and some abbreviations are for German words. It is very difficult for a native speaker in one language to guess abbreviations in the other language without a key.

Pons Dictionary advanced

I agree that abbreviations are difficult noted in a critique. However everything else with this dictionary is exceptional. The ability to copy anything in memory and have it come up immediately in the dictionary is great. The definitions are right on and the example sentences are invaluable to understand how the word is used. I am looking up German words and the definitions are clear. Great bargain, very good dictionary. I wonder what could have been left out in the premium. Great job Pons!!! I wonder if those with the premium would comment. I find it hard to believe Ive got anything but a winner here.

Excellent app

This is a great app with tons of content and learning tools like the flash cards. Couldnt imagine a better or more robust resource for the ipod/pad platform. Yes, its expensive, but it worth every penny to have this lifetime language resource in the palm of your hand. highly recommended.

No list of abbreviations, sings

A guide to using the dictionary as a dictionary, not as a piece of technology, would help. For example, in the German translation of an English word, a noun is listed with the gender "nt." if you click it, it takes you to New Testament. Not neuter or neutral. Similarly, it is not clear if the plural or the genitive form is listed first in brackets. An experienced reader would be able to figure it out, but it would be much easier to be able to just find that kind of info in a How to Use the Dictionary section like all dictionaries have had for the last few hundred years.

Good

It freezes a while when you go back to the program after you minimize it.

Extremely useful

Could still use conjugations and der die or das with the nouns in the word list, but a great resource.

Well worth the price

Thanks for fixing the pronunciation-through-the-speaker bug! Its so great to have such a comprehensive dictionary able to fit in the pocket and to be accessible instantly and offline. Definitions show context and usage. I use it all the time and Im very happy with it. The "favorites" list is helpful to store words for later review. A few things could be improved: 1. Splash screen: Eliminate it. It wastes time. 2. Inflexion Table: There is now a list of irregular verbs (lacking subjunctive forms), but I wish each verb had its own inflexion table, like one would see in Canoo. Declension tables for adjectives would be nice, too. 3. Optional Download of Pronunciations: Allow user to delete English (or Deutsch) pronunciations to save memory. One doesnt need both sets. 4. More Deutsch Pronunciations: Only the base words have pronunciations. There is a pronunciation for "Rock" but not the more-difficult plural "Röcke". There is one for "sein", but not "wäre", one for "werden" but not "würden".

It works as advertised!

Once you have the software installed on the main computer (I had a little trouble with that part, but after some repetitions it worked ), and user email and password is set, the mobile app works well, and I am enjoying doing a majority of my study on my mobile device.

Impressive

Since I am completely new to learning languages, I need something comprehensive and approachable. I want to spend my money and feel like I got my moneys worth. I have downloaded several other language software before and been disappointed. Not this time. I have learned more in the past hour than I could possibly imagine. I am very happy with the way this software works, and while I am still figuring out how it works, I have found it pretty easy and intuitive to use

IOS 8 update

This app doesnt work with IOS 8! Plz, update this app asap, lazy guys

Frustrating and non intuitive Flashcards

The instructions and user interface for flash cards is just bad and not intuitive. After struggling for some time and trying to make sense of the "Help", I gave up.

Good for offline use

I love that I can get to this on my iPhone 5 even in airplane mode and that they have a decent amount of pronunciations. This isnt Leo.org but gets me through most questions I have. Overall pretty good little pocket dictionary.

Almost perfect for daily use (Version 3.11)

The lastest update crashes on my iPhone 4 under iOS 7.1.2, it stays in the background but user Interface always disappears after a few seconds. Please fix this quickly. I purchased this app quite a while ago and found the available entries to be sufficient even in daily use in business and engineering. The Version 3.11 added comprehensive lists of irregular verbs, flash cards for easy learning and audio output. What would make it even better is a flag at the top indicating which language you are entering combined with switching to the right keyboard layout. Also an option to upgrade from advanced to business or premium with only paying differential price would be nice.

Pons Advanced German-English Dictionary

I chose this from the various Pons offline German- English dictionaries because of the intermediate cost and its features. The entries are exact matches to those Ive compared with entries in my hardcover copy of their 2001 Deutsch-Englisch volume of the Pons Worterbuch fur Schule und Studium (add umlauts). Im happy with my choice.

Free apps like dict.cc and linguee are better

It’s very frustrating to buy the PONS app and then discover that I have an easier time finding numerous words when I use dict.cc or linguee apps, which don’t cost anything (except a pittance if you want to get rid of ads). I hardly ever use the app anymore because I’ve had so many fruitless searches on it. That said, I’ve lived in Germany for 15 years and only tend to look up “difficult” words. They still ought to be in the dictionary, though.
