Wörterbuch Englisch PONS App Reviews

Essential for german students

It took me four weeks to find the best wörtebuch for iOs, but thanks to my teacher here in Berlin ive found Pons. It is a complete and easy to search words, and comes with plurals (which most dictionaries dont). Bit too expensive, but worthy!

Missing important words

I was looking up "bellwether", such a common term, yet there is no such entry. Rather disappointing given that this is no free app!

printout

thanx for this great app.. i m a very regular user ... it would very helpful to have the ability to print out the learning cards or just the have to learn cards. it could be in a listing form or a exceltable..

Läuft nicht unter IOS8 - E40 rausgeschmissen As a language consultant, I need to access the App during my working day.

Very deep and flexible

Very deep and flexible. The English side of it includes extensive word form lists which the German side does not. It is therefore frustrating for English speakers trying to learn German, though still very useful. Major problem: the iPhone 3.1 upgrade has disabled the wonderful pronunciation feature! Please, can we have this back?

Useful tool

Ive been using this app for 2 years now. Its been proven useful and versatile to me. Almost any word I can find with lots of common phrases. Nice that you can tap any word and it brings you to its main entry. Conjunction tables for English words available, too. But still only 4 stars. The design could be better (ugly PONS banner on a blue app frame) One thing that annoys me is that the iPod music stops once I open the dictionary. I have to manually restart my music again.

Great clipboard look-up feature

I love how this app automatically looks up word copied into the clipboard when you open it. PONS dictionaries are my favourite, and this one is very comprehensive. Once you set the font sizes to a decent size, the app looks quite nice. I only wish there was a way to purchase a larger number of words, in-app, instead of having to buy the Premium version (which only has 200,000 more words).

Pons German-English dictionary

Doesnt open in iOS8. Dont spend money on it at this point!

Awesome App!!!!!

Worth the money, although I think $20 would be a bit more reasonable. This is an excellent dictionary, though. I like the History tab as you have instant access to your most recent searches. Also, the audio is clear and loud enough. A couple of requests: 1) Please continue to add voice pronunciations 2) If you could add the letters of the alphabet vertically down the search page, it would really be helpful. I know we can place a letter in the search and that works but it would be an additional help to just have the letters there. What Im talking about is similar to the way Apple does the Contact lists on the iPhone. Theres both a search box and the vertical alphabet. Thanks for a very useful tool! I love it!

Fantastic dictionary, but the interface needs work

The print version of the PONS German-English Dictionary (sold in the US under the Harper-Collins name) is hands down the best dictionary out there. Although this version cant have all the entries in the full dictionary, its nonetheless the best on-the-go dictionary Ive used. Unlike almost every electronic dictionary application out there, this one is more than just a mere lexicon - it includes usage examples and variations. That being said, the interface simply wasnt ready to be released into the wild yet. Taps on the word often do not work, and behavior is often inconsistent. (I just now held down my finger on a word and instead of showing the definition, the interface inexplicably scrolled down about one and half screens). Im sure these flaws will be worked out over coming versions, but if you can put up with it for the time being, this is a great app. When they fix the interface, it will be the best.

Best app

Perfect for my German Lit 490 class. Lots of technical words like "Vergangenheitsbewaeltigung". The audio feature is superfluous at this level and just takes up space, but she does have a nice voice. Totally worth 24.99.

If you want a better dictionary, youll have to buy a Book!

Sometimes you get what you pay for, sometimes you get less than you pay for. You get a lot more than you paid for with the PONS dictionary. Its quite a bargain and I would have quite cheerfully have paid a lot more to get this excellent little dictionary. The publisher has an enviable well-deserved reputation as a purveyor of electronic German-English dictionaries. The less expensive alternatives may well suffice for someone who is planning an occasional trip to a German speaking country and anxious to avoid using the wrong restroom, but the PONS is much more comprehensive and will probably remain the best choice until someone squeezes an unabridged Collins or Langenscheidt into portable form. My only quibble, and its a minor annoyance, is that PONS uses British English and as an American I occasionally have no idea what a term means. The print Collins unabridged manages to include both British and American English and Id hope that some time in the future PONS will follow that admirable practice. Having used PONS on other platforms, Im confident that the various undocumented features (bugs) will disappear as Paragon continues to update the product. Theyve been very conscientious about that in the past.

great app

Great app... almost. But it only gets one star because its among the most expensive out there and yet they never update it. There are so many things it needs, and many requests for features and bug fixes. So, 4 stars becomes 1. Update and Ill change my mind.

Best german - english dict I managed to find

Really the best ger-eng dictionary I managed to find in the appstore. I also used the previous version that was slower and had some issues, all is great so far in this version. It is quick enough, has all the words I needed so far, many audio recordings. Price is 5-10$ than it should be. I recommend anyway because of the app quality.

Quick, simple, comprehensive

This is a five pound dictionary reformatted to enable quick searches from your iPhone. As a bonus, you can build your own flash card library. If you have any need to go between German and English, get this.

I love this dictionary...

comprehensive and easy to use; it should be for the money. now lets have it for iPad! (then it will be 5 stars)

Essential if traveling to Germany

I travel to Germany 7-8 times per year. While many Germans speak some English, its easy to get in a situation where you cant depend on it. Yes its expensive, but it is also the best I have found so far. This is great on several fronts: Comprehensive - I find almost everything I need covered (so paying the cost is well worth it when you might be stuck) Easy to use - interface pretty intuitive. Before I had little books with limited words, and not always convenient to carry a big enough book to do any good. This is like a great big dictionary. Pronounciation guide - the spoken version is terrific, since my English way of pronouncing is often far off the mark Off line usage - I find I have to turn off internet access when in Germany because of cost, but this app works just fine regardless. So its a must have. I hestitated because of the price, but have not regretted it at all.

Good all-around heavyweight dictionary

This dictionary works great and is a good subtitute for the large paperback Websters that I use for German language classes. However, it is missing 3 things in my opinion: 1. A list of irregular verbs with infinitive, present indicative, imperfect past, and perfect past forms. 2. Better derivation of the infinitive from any conjugated form of the verb. The Accio app is much better in this respect. 3. A thesaurus would be a nice feature for common words, if not all words (esp. adjectives and adverbs) The app can be a bit slow to load an entry (my phone is a 3G, YMMV) and will display the last word you looked up for a second until it updates. Overall the app is a good value, but not much more comprehensive than Accio which is 1/10th the price.

What a disappointment - just cant believe this!

If you are (like me) learning German - do not buy this app. No verb conjugation. I cant believe nobody has written about this yet. No mentioning of this in the app description either. It has all the verb forms for English and none for German. How can they claim to be a "two-way" dictionary and have only half of the content for one of the languages. Shame and waste of money. I wish I could give it no stars at all after wasting $25
